As most of you know, Jonas has recently left us to start his studies at the University of the Sunshine Coast, but like most students who have finished he came back to say hello to his friends and his teachers. While he was here I had the opportunity to ask him about Uni life. He said that he is finding it interesting but challenging, which I suppose is a good thing. So, best of luck to Jonas and of course to the other boys who are studying at Uni.

Lamingtons were on the menu for the “What’s Cooking?” afternoon option class yesterday. It looks like fun and the food is certainly delicious but students actually work hard. They learn lots of interesting and relevant vocabulary/ phrases and they get to practise speaking in a fun environment. Classes include visits to the supermarket and food outlets where students can use the English they are learning in a ‘real world’ situation. Quite often students get to introduce recipes from their own countries which is a wonderful way to learn about different cultures and countries. The best thing about it, however, is that it’s all done in English! Keep up the good work!

Tribal Travel is offering a free tour to all Global Village students … looking for wild kangaroos.
Kangaroos are the iconic symbol of Australia, and even though many people may have seen them at a zoo, nothing is quite like the experience of spotting them in the wild.
This weird and wonderful animal is most easily spotted at dawn and dusk in large grassy fields, paddocks and golf courses. Take advantage of local knowledge and visit the areas where kangaroos are most prominently seen around Noosa.
If you’d like to book on this free tour THIS THURSDAY, just head to the Tribal Travel shop to put your name down. Or speak to one of the lovely Tribal Travel girls when they come into your school.
Please note: There is no guarantee of spotting kangaroos, but we’ll try and it’ll be fun!
First of all, we would like to say well done to all the students who undertook FCE and CAE classes last year and secondly, congratulations to all the students who passed. We are very happy for you!
A special mention goes to Lukas Fritz who need an A at FCE and achieved it in order to become a pilot, and to Eva Born, who achieved an A at CAE level. As if that was ever an issue, “You Go Girl!”
Best of luck to you all.
It’s been a great year! So, what better way to end it than having a test in the morning, receiving Secret Santa gifts, singing Christmas tunes, sitting on Santa’s lap and having lunch together? A special thank you to Santa who did a great job giving out the presents. GV Santa Awards were presented to: Manuel (Elementary) for being the most punctual person with a hangover, Harold (Pre-Intermediate A) for turning sleeping in class into an ART FORM, Adriana (Intermediate A) for being the most determined student to get to Maroochydore, Memo (Upper Intermediate) for being the most ambidextrous student and to Sarah (Advanced) for being an eternal optimist and for always having a smile. Have a wonderful and safe Christmas everyone and see you next year. Roll on 2011.
(P.S. Merry Christmas Maddy, Louanne, Nathalie, Adi, Warren, Jenny and Becky- we missed you. See you next year!)
Next week, you’ll be asked to choose from a list of options for your afternoon classes, so, I’ve decided to provide you with some information about one of the option classes which is going to be offered: Movie Mania.
You can choose Movie Mania as an option if you are a Pre-Intermediate, an Intermediate or an Upper Intermediate student.
This option allows you to unleash your creative talents. You will have 3 weeks to research, write and direct a movie.
What’s great about this option is that you’ll have the opportunity to incorporate and use all your English skills. Not to mention, that you’ll be able to work with other students from other classes and across levels.
As part of the process, you will get to choose the genre of your film, write a script, film and edit your short movie. At the end of the three weeks your movie will viewed by the whole school.
So, if you fancy yourself as a budding actor or can see your name in lights sign up for the class.
Patty.
This is our third week at our new campus and it has been quite busy for us all. Now that the dust has settled it’s nice to see how well you have all adjusted. It’s also great to see our old students who pop in to say hello and have a look around at our new school. The response has been fantastic and I know they are envious! Below are snap shots of our school and some of the things that happened on Friday. The teachers worked until they could attend the party and Jose and Bruno served drinks and food at the official opening party held last friday afternoon while the rest of the students went to Cotton Tree Park and had a picnic. I have also included some photos taken of classes in progress and the wonderful photos Maddy took trying to capture the sunset from her new office.
Patty Thomas. (Academic Manager)
It was a great experience. I have studied before at another English language school and when I compare schools, Global Village is so much better! A special thanks to my teacher, Andy, for his commitment and patience. And also a big thank you to Maddy for the extra activities that were all well organized and interesting! The atmosphere in Global Village is fantastic and it felt a lot like home.
Alessandro Toscani. Pre-Intermediate.
Some of our former students, Daniel, Kris and Camillo have been lucky enough to get casual/part-time work at a local Engineering company. It’s been a dream come true for Daniel, Kris and Camillo because as Mechanical and Electrical Engineers they have been lucky enough to work in their chosen profession.
“Having work experience at Fink Engineering is like a dream come true for me. When I left my home country (Brazil) I knew it would be a great opportunity if I could get a job/internal ship in my field, but I also knew that it would be hard . So, when I got the chance at Fink Engineering, I was astonished!
After working here for 3 weeks, I’ve learnt many things. Even though technical English has been a challenge for me, I am getting over it with my work mates helping me all the time.
I know this work experience in Australia will be awesome on my resume. So far, I am more than excited to work with something where I know what I am doing.”

“When I came to Australia, it was naturally to improve my English. In my first few weeks, I didn’t really speak English; I knew only some easy words like : I don’t understand, I don’t know, yes or no.
My host Family is very good. I like them very much. I can speak with my host parents and my two sisters, and do many things with them. I’ll always remember my trip to the Cold Coast with my family. During, my first month here, there was a other student at my homestay and he helped me a lot.
I’ve met some mervellous friends and I travelled with them during the weekend to; Brisbane, Fraser Island, Noosa, Montville and Byron Bay. I’ll never forget the trip to Fraser Island with the car and the terrible dingo.
Today, I can say : I’ve improved my English a lot. I was in the Elementary class for twelve weeks and I have learned very much. I like to speak English with my friends and I can write this text now. I am very happy with that.
I’ll always remember my three months in Caloundra, BBQ, Beaches and parties in Mooloolaba.
Thank you !”
Marine Bally. Elementary Class.
When Fatma joined us last year it was at the beginning of her journey to become the first female pilot in Oman.
Fatma and the boys; Saud, Sultan, Mohammed, Yousuf and Hamid took an IELTS preparation course to meet CASA requirements.
Now, many months later, Fatma has qualified as a Helicopter Pilot and couldn’t be happier.
In fact, she was so happy today she even allowed me to take a photo.
Best of luck Fatma and keep in touch!

The FCE students were very democratic in their approach to select a recipe for yesterday’s challenge. They were all given some pumpkin on Tuesday and were asked to come up with a recipe within the $5.00 limit. In class yesterday, during morning tea, they sampled all the delicious things they made and voted for the risotto.
The recipe is as follows:
1 onion
1 spring onion
150 g pumpkin
1 dl milk
1dl cream
3 cups risotto
50 g parmesan
stock
water
Cut the onion, spring onions and put them in a fry-pan with some oil at a moderate heat. Add the risotto and fry for a few minutes.
Prepare the brothe with water and stock separately.
Add the liquid to the risotto so that it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pot. Cook for about 20 minutes at a moderate heat continuously mixing.
Add the prepared pumpkin and milk towards the end of the cooking process.
Serve with a sprinkle of parmesan.
Mmmm…bon appetite!
Tourism Australia is currently running a photo competition called “There’s Nothing Like Australia” which gives participants an opportunity to share their favourite moments in Australia.
The competition is a great way to show off your photographic skills and to practise your English at the same time.
When you submit your photo entry, you also need to complete the sentence “There’s nothing like…” with a phrase which explains your photo and your favourite experience in Australia.
You can enter the competition online at: http://nothinglikeaustralia.com
Given the high quality of entries for the GV Caloundra photo competition, why not give this competition a try too?
Perhaps “There’s nothing like studying at GV Caloundra!” might prove to be a winning entry!
Good luck!
The long awaited trip to Fraser Island has come and gone. Seven students left Caloundra Friday afternoon in search of all that Fraser Island has to offer. It was an eventful three days which included some dingoes stealing their breakfast one morning. Most of them have made it to class on Tuesday, a little sun burned and very exhausted.
The sun is meant to be shining and the clouds clearing on Friday so surfing has been put off. Still $20 still at 2.30pm and still at King’s Beach! Fingers crossed we can get out on the waves.

Can you imagine yourself on the beach listening to your favourite singer playing his fantastic songs in front of you ? I have to tell you about the experience that I had.
Last Easter holidays, I went with two friends that I have met in Global Village, Charles and Camilo, to the Blues Festival in Byron Bay, that happens once a year. I watched the most famous Blues singers on the same day, playing on six different stages. The people there were extremely excited about the songs that were being played, and even if you are not a big fan of this kind of music, you would certainly enjoy the singers’ performances.
I must admit that the best singer that I listened to was obviously Jack Johnson, because he grabbed my attention and I was really into his songs. He played his most famous song in a different way that I had never heard previously.
Anyway, if you have a chance to visit Byron Bay at the time of the Blues Festival next year, you’ll not regret your decision.

Last week, two friends and I went to Byron Bay for the Easter break. In this city, you can find the most easterly point of Australia, but that isn’t the only thing which Byron Bay has to offer. It has one of the most gorgeous beaches I’ve been to in my life! The water is so clear and it has perfect waves to surf and not to mention lots of beautiful people.
Coincidentally, the Blues Festival was held at Byron Bay last weekend. The festival is held once a year and you can see lots of good “Blues” musicians from all over the world. Unfortunately, it comes at a price. It’s quite expensive for a student. So, if you really want to be a part of the festival, then it is a good idea to save some money because it’s worth it.
Finally, if you want a tip about which cities you must visit in Australia, Byron Bay is definitely one of these. You will meet all kinds of people but all of them have something in common, like, they are extremely friendly, adventurous and kind.
You must go there.
Regards,
Charles Bicalho (Intermediate Class)
Claudia, Angelica and Mayra had an enjoyable time over the Easter break. They loaded the car and headed towards Byron Bay for two nights and on their way back they stopped at Surfer’s Paradise for the day.
They loved the atmosphere at Byron Bay and said there were lots of cheap shops so they did some shopping. Angelica really liked the club “Beach” because it was full of Latinos.
