News from Maria in Colombia

Hi everyone.
I´m back home in Colombia now. I have an intereting job and I bought a new car. I´m very
excited about that.
My trip to Los Angeles was long, about 30 hours. My plane took off at
11:00 am on Saturday (Caloundra time) and I arrived to my hotel in Los
Angeles at 12:AM (4:00 pm on Sunday Caloundra time).
I spent 4 days in Las Vegas. It was a great time despite the weather that
oscilated between 40 and 42°C. I think the best word to describe the city
is “extravagant”. All places have a casino. It´s a 24 hour a day city.
I went to The Grand Canyon, the views are amazing and you can feel so
peaceful. It´s a beautiful place.
I also saw “O”, a great performance by the Cirque du Solei. It was
incredible.
I just want to say thanks to all of you, my time in Australia was special
and I will always remember it.
For Andy, Patty and Vivien thanks for your help and your friendliness and
to GV students  – please take advantage of this opportunity and enjoy it. I did.
A big hug!!!

Maria

David revisits GV Caloundra

Student – Teacher relationships have to be one of the best parts of teaching. Friendships are formed and nurtured: experiences shared and memories treasured when in years to come we remember the ‘good old times’.

This campus opened September 07 and since then we have had the opportunity to meet and, in time, farewell wonderful students who joined us and became part of our school and little community.

When the time comes it is always sad to say goodbye, but, thankfully quite a lot of you keep in touch via email and some of you even visit.

Last week David returned to GV Caloundra to farewell us before he headed back to Korea. David was one of the first students to study with us here at this campus, so it was a touching gesture that he made his way from Sydney to say goodbye. I’m sure I can speak for Andy, Vivien, Spanish and Tanya as well, when I say: how wonderful it was to see David again and how much we will miss him.

So, I would like to say a special thank you: to all the students who think of us, who stop by to see us again before they leave and to all the students who email and send photos, including us in their lives by letting us know how they are and what they’re doing. We appreciate it!

Chieko travels to Noth Queensland

My Birthday

Hello,  I’ve been busy recently.
I thought I would get a farm job easily as long as I went to Bundaberg before I came here but the weather wasn’t good this year so some of farming areas have smaller crops of vegetables than usual. Bundaberg’s workers hostels arrange  jobs but some of hostels don’t have enough jobs for workers at this time. The hostel where I stay in sometime has a few people on standby for work so I’m lucky to get job.
Anyway thank you letting me know about the job on Fraser Island but unfortunately I’m going to north after I get a scuba diving license.  I’ll go to the Town of 1770, Airlie Beach, the Whitsunday Islands, Townsville and then Cairins. I wasn’t interested in the Whitsunday Islands before I came to Australia, but when I was staying in Caloundra some people recommended those islands so now I really fancy going there. I told someone I met on the road about this need to go to the Whitsundays and they said the reason why I must go there is because my soulmate (future husband!?) must be waiting for me there – so I really have to go. I hope I’ll find a job around there. See you!

Mark and Karen hit Saigon

Hello everyone at GV Caloundra, just a quick message to let you know where we are. We are currently in Saigon, Vietnam after spending a few days in Hong Kong. After a very hectic time packing and preparing for our trip we flew from Brisbane to HK on the 26th May for a few days of RnR before hitting SE Asia. We had a great time in Honkers but definitely want to return because our short stay did not do justice to all this amazing city has to offer.

True to form we ended up on the harbour shortly after arrival which is spectacular at night with just block after block of high-rise buildings (30 stories looks small) all lit-up at night with a laser show. Patty, Honkers is the place to go for fashion label shopping with big discounts but if you really want the ‘genuine’ copies you need to head to the markets and get an invitation to a back room up several flights of stairs with guards on the door! That is where you can buy Prada, LVT and other brands at a fraction of the list price. Saigon (HCMC) is a complete contrast to HK with cheap-as-chips products in markets and on the streets everywhere but with none of the sophistication and class of HK. Everything and everyone is into deals with Western tourists an easy target but so far we have only been ripped-off once, the cab from the airport, where despite Karen’s best negotiating skills (she had half the cabbies at the airport lined-up comparing prices) we still paid about 2x the going rate but when it only costs you $10 it was a cheap lesson learnt.

So far we love Saigon and have met some really nice, kind, genuine people but can understand why others do not take to the city as much of it is run-down and dirty. Today was Karen’s birthday and we celebrated in style but still spent a fraction of what it would cost in Oz, also did the Chu Chi tunnels tour which was very interesting but very hot and sweaty.Tomorrow we are off to the Mekong Delta then north to Hoi An, Hue, Hanoi and Halong Bay before bussing it to Laos and Thailand. It definitely seems like it was the right move to book tours and travel once we arrived here as it is much, much cheaper than pre-booking from Oz. Good hotel rooms in Saigon (with a/c, a must) can be had for less than $20/night and fabulous meals for under $5 including a beer! There are also many English teaching opportunities in this city with all the locals keen to learn or improve their English. Hope all is well at GV Caloundra and will send you an update and some pics in a few days.
Cheers, Mark & Karen

Ricky is living a dream life

Hello Patty! Andy! Karen! Mark! and Alll!!
How are you all?!
I am always fine! I am at DayDream Island with Yula and Jason.
Even though I have spent great time here at DDI, I always miss Caloundra which is my second hometown. Actually it’s my first one in Australia and I feel sorry for not contacting with my teacher Patty and my homestay parents Mark and Karen.
Say hello to everyone
I’ll be there someday, It won’t be long!

The end of an era – Schebellas say so long to Caloundra

Last Friday was a sad day as the school said goodbye to teachers Karen and Mark Schebella. We know they will be particularly missed by their students in The Elementary Class and the Intermediate Class.

They are leaving Caloundra at the end of the month and will travel to Europe and eventually South America where they hope to find some work teaching.

The students prepared an enormous card which I am sure they will value. All the students joined GV staff in seeing Mark and Karen off. There was the usual sausages in bread, beer and of course a few speeches, but surprisingly no tears.

We wish the Schebellas well and we hope they will keep us informed of their adventures by writing for this blog.

Remember me – I’m Asami

Please use my photos on the  blog.
I will be  happy to look them.

Anyway, my trip was the most unusual and fantastic time in my whole life.
I’m really a lucky chick!!!hehe
I went to Tassie, of course!  This was the best place.
We started to travel from Brisbane and went to Byron Bay, Ninbin, Newcastle, Sydney, Blue Mountains, Canberra, Melbourne, Tasmania, Great Ocean Road and Adelaide,,,,,etc.
We caught ”The Spirit of Tasmania” ferry to Tasmania and we spent a week in Tassie.
All places were awesome, but I’m sure Caloundra is the best plase in Australia!
I miss Caloundra so much!!

Say hello to everyone.
love

Letter from Lisa before she leaves

Hey classmates

How are you? How is the school? I hope, you are not too naughty to the teachers;-))

My travel was great:-) I saw a lot of things. When we were on Fraser Island, I saw dolphins, we spent 2 days sailing by the Whitsunday Islands. We went to Magnetic Island, the Daintree River (croc-tour), Cape Tribulation and did snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef ….. big tourist-program;-) It was so funny to travel with the wicked-camper: no shower, no toillet, only a small kitchen = great experience. My travel ends in Cairns. Then I left Cairns and my friends and I flew to Melbourne. I did the Great Ocean Tour (12 Apostles) and sightseeing in the city. And now, Im in Sydney and I am enjoying it here for the last 2 weeks before I go back to Switzerland. Maybe, I’ll make a stop in Thailand:-)

I look forward to hearing from you:-)

See you

Lisa

Mark is in Melbourne

Hello everyone at GV Caloundra.  Certainly Melbourne is very different, but it’s going fine. I got a job very quickly teaching some Chinese teenagers. They are all beginners unfortunately.  I much prefer my old Pre Intermediate class.

I caught up with some ex-students a couple of weeks ago, namely Zenobia, Rhino and Hyemi. I also had an audition for the quiz show Temptation, but I haven’t heard back about it yet. You may see me on TV.

Give my regards to the gang and ask them to keep sending on as many photos as possible.
Thanks a million
Mark
