Students and staff celebrated the beginning of Cambridge classes and the end of Ramadan yesterday afternoon and as you can see from the photo there were lots of smiling faces and happy students. Students mingled, taught each other different dances, clapped and cheered all afternoon. We also discovered that we have a few students with hidden singing talents. We caught the attention of passers by and shop keepers on Duporth Avenue and I was told this morning that they had just as much fun watching us.
A crowd estimated at more than 500,000 people took up vantage points around Brisbane’s CBD for Brisbane Festival’s opening spectacular featuring QBE Riverfire.
Key vantage points were packed to capacity as the best spots were claimed early by the well-prepared, equipped with picnic chairs, eskie, portable barbeques and even a couch!
The F111′s dump and burn finale didn’t disappoint as the jets traced the length of the Brisbane River three times. The skies were filled with 100 fireworks effects, put in place by a team of 32 pyro-technicians firing up 2,000kg of explosives and 16,000 kg of fireworks!
A special weekend trip to the Brisbane Riverfire Festival has been put together exclusively for Global Village Sunshine Coast students from Maroochydore and Noosa.
Get picked up in a personal GV bus that will take us straight to Brisbane for a weekend of fun and fireworks. Stay in the funkiest backpacker in Australia that is located only 150 metres from the Storey Bridge where the main fireworks will come to life. The rooms will only have GV students and are equipped with their own toilet and bathroom so no sharing with strangers! You will have free time on Saturday and Sunday to explore Brisbane and be back home in time for dinner on Sunday.
There are limited places on the bus so book now! Maddy will be back on Monday or leave a message with Patty to make sure you dont miss out on the fun!

Open Cockpit Weekend is QAM’s annual fundraising event which is held on the middle weekend of the Queensland July school holidays. As the name suggests, the cockpits of several aircraft are opened for public inspection. Museum visitors are invited to actually sit in the cockpits of selected aircraft. Some of the larger aircraft, for example our 1937 vintage Douglas DC-3, are also opened up so that visitors can experience an aisle that goes uphill, sit in the cabin and see what air travel was like in days gone by.
The museum is in Caloundra, admission is $11 for Adults and $8 for Students. For more information see Maddy at Reception.

Last week’s orientation day was a big success; students loved their new school and are looking forward to starting there next week.
If you don’t believe me read what these students had to say about it:
“The school was very good, I look to move to Maroochydore” - Martha, Pre-intermediate
“Perfect, it was the best!” – Julio, Upper Intermediate
“The school is better because it is newer and bigger and the balcony has a view plus there is more places to go out” – Corinne, CAE
“The school was very good because there is more space, a nice view and the computer room is much better” – Angelica and Anja, Intermediate
“It was very nice, and very modern. It was a really nice day.” – Patrick, Upper Intermediate
“It had a really good view and is in a very good location in Maroochydore. It has a beautiful beach behind the school. I feel better to study here because I will have more things to do, I’m really excited for the move to Maroochydore” - Jose
The afternoon picnic in Cotton Tree park was also a highlight, students can look forward to many more BBQ’s and activities by the calm beach. Students were also happy to discover that there is a little more nightlife around Maroochydore with some not arriving home till 4am!
We can’t wait to see you all on Tuesday morning at our brand new school!

This Thursday the 3rd of June is Orientation Day at our new Maroochydore campus. Morning classes will be as usual and all students who are going to Maroochydore are expected to be in class till lunchtime. A bus will be leaving Caloundra campus at 12.30pm, students should be waiting outside the reception area. We will arrive at Maroochydore at approximately 1.15pm and start a tour of the new Maroochydore School. One student from each class will be nominated to choose their new classroom.

There is a bottle shop close by if you wish to purchase your own. Students will start the night playing some fun drinking games before heading to Beach House Bar and Grill and the Pig ‘n’ Whistle for cheap drink specials and karaoke followed by student night at Club Envy.

This Friday afternoon’s activity was a test of athletic and linguistic skills in the summer sunshine.
The temperature was hot and the competition even hotter as teams participated in the GV Caloundra Pentathlon, five events which tested teamwork, enthusiasm and communication skills.
Events included charades, the egg and spoon race and, most challenging of all, a race in which all members of each team had to pass an onion between one another without using their hands, which led to some pretty funny results!
When the points were added up at the end of the afternoon, the Crocs team were declared the winners and celebrated with a well-earned, ice-cold six-pack!
Well done to everyone who took part – have a great weekend!
Next weekend we have a bus going to the Gold Coast with GV Noosa and GV Caloundra students. First stop is Dreamworld and Whitewaterworld, then off to Surfers Paradise for a night club tour. Remember there are lots of great activities happening on the Sunny Coast and Monday 26 of January is a public holiday. Classes resume Tuesday, 27 January.
If you have never been to Australia Zoo then this could be an ideal day for your first visit.
John Williamson, the famous Aussie musician who was a friend of Steve Irwin – Crocodile Hunter, will help locals and international guests celebrate Australia Day on January 26 at 10:30am. You will also find kangaroos to pat, koalas to cuddle and of course crocodiles to stay away from.
A HOME AMONG THE GUM TREES sung by John Williamson at Australia Zoo
I’ve been around the world a couple of times, or maybe more,
I’ve seen the sights, I’ve had delights on every foreign shore,
but when my mates all ask me the place that I adore,
I tell them right away.
Give me a home among the gum trees,
with lots of plum trees, a sheep or two, a ka-kangaroo.
A clothes line out the back, verandah out the front,
and an old rocking chair.
You can see me in the kitchen cooking up a roast,
or Vegemite on toast, just you and me, a cup of tea.
And later on we’ll settle down and mull up on the porch,
and watch the possums play.
Give me a home among the gum trees,
with lots of plum trees, a sheep or two, a ka-kangaroo.
A clothes line out the back, verandah out the front,
and an old rocking chair.
There’s a Safeway up the corner, and a Woolys down the street,
a brand new place theyve opened up where they regulate the heat,
but I’d trade them all tomorrow for a simple bush retreat
where the kookaburras call.
Give me a home among the gum trees,
with lots of plum trees, a sheep or two, a ka-kangaroo.
A clothes line out the back, verandah out the front,
and an old rocking chair.
Some people like their houses with fences all around,
others live in mansions, and some beneath the ground.
But Me, I like the bush, you know with rabbits running ’round,
and a pumpkin vine out the back.
Give me a home among the gum trees,
with lots of plum trees, a sheep or two, a ka-kangaroo.
A clothes line out the back, verandah out the front,
and an old rocking chair.
Give me a home among the gum trees,
with lots of plum trees, a sheep or two, a ka-kangaroo.
A clothes line out the back, verandah out the front,
and an old rocking chair.
This is your chance to make suggestions about how we can make GV Caloundra even better. Simply write your suggestion on a piece of paper and pop it in the box.
Also please feel free to discuss any problems you have or any ideas that you have with Andy. The door is always open.
